The Lincoln Memorial Gardens were designed in 1936 as a living memorial to former U.S. president Abraham Lincoln. The original spot sat on 63 acres (25 ha) of farm land, and all the plants were native to the three states lived in by Lincoln: Illinois, Kentucky and Indiana. Today the garden is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and encompasses the old garden on the 100 acres (41 ha) of land designated for it in Springfield.
